Owen, Robert Dale
(9 nov. 1801, Glasgow, Escocia–24 jun. 1877, lago George, N.Y., EE.UU.).

Reformador social estadounidense. En 1825 emigró junto con su padre, Robert Owen, para establecer una comunidad en New Harmony, Ind. Dirigió el periódico local, New Harmony Gazette, hasta 1827, año en que estableció vínculos con Frances Wright. Con el tiempo, ambos se establecieron en la ciudad de Nueva York, donde Owen dirigió el Free Enquirer, y participaron activamente en el Partido de los Trabajadores. Owen regresó a New Harmony en 1832. Tras integrar la legislatura de Indiana, fue elegido para la Cámara de Representantes (1843–47), donde presentó un proyecto de ley que creó el Instituto Smithsoniano. Después fue embajador de EE.UU. en Italia (1855–58). Firme partidario de la emancipación, en 1861, instó a Abraham Lincoln, por medio de una carta, a poner fin a la esclavitud; se dice que esta misiva influyó hondamente en el presidente.
